Abstract: Cell-free massive MIMO is an emerging technology poised to meet the unprecedented key performance indicators (KPIs) of 6G networks in terms of throughput, latency, and sustainability. Its distributed architecture mitigates the physical limitations of path loss while exploiting enhanced macro-diversity gains. In this seminar, we will present recent advances in the field and demonstrate how cell-free massive MIMO can serve as a unifying platform capable of consolidating all existing radio access technologies.
Biography: Dr Michalis Matthaiou (IEEE Fellow) is a Professor and Deputy Director of the Centre for Wireless Innovation, Queen’s University Belfast. UK. Under his co-leadership, CWI has become the largest physical layer wireless base in the UK, comprising 80 people (including 5 IEEE Fellows). His research interests span signal processing for wireless communications, beyond massive MIMO, reflecting intelligent surfaces, mm-wave/THz systems and AI-empowered communications. He has published over 380 peer-reviewed articles in these fields and his research is underpinned by a multi-million grant portfolio. He currently holds the ERC Consolidator Grant BEATRICE (2021-2026) focused on the interface between information and electromagnetic theories.
